REVEALED: The most common reason why Brits get their travel insurance claim rejected
Many sensible holidaymakers take insurance out in case the worst happens while they're away.
From accommodation issues to medical assistance, insurance can help with a range of different things while travelling.
However, what some people don't realise is there are several easy to miss factors that can mean claims are rejected and no money is paid out.
Compliance expert Chris Payne, who works for Total Travel Protection, revealed the most common reasons Brits get their travel insurance claim rejected.
The number one reason in 2024, and so far this year, for unsuccessful claims is the 'excess trap'.
This occurs when travellers try to claim for amounts below their policy excess and therefore won't receive a pay out.
Chris explains: 'Travel excess refers to the amount of money you agree to pay towards any claim you make.
'For example, a traveller lost their passport and travel documents and they made a £50 claim.

'The excess for this claim is £75, therefore, the claim is not payable.'
The expert reveal there are no-excess policy options and advises considering what is an 'affordable' excess before purchasing.
'Some insurers will offer no-excess policies, however they are usually more expensive,' he adds.
'When taking out insurance, make sure you set a realistic and affordable excess, as the last thing you want is to be caught out with a smaller payout than you expected.'
Another mistake that trips many Brits up is missing policy add-ons when taking out the insurance.
This includes things like cover for gadgets or winter sport activities, with some thinking they are covered for it but in reality, they are not.
Chris says: 'Before purchasing or even looking for any travel insurance, it's good practice to write a list of everything you will be doing on holiday and will need insurance for.
'This way, you're less likely to get stuck without the appropriate cover.'

The compliance expert advises to 'always read the fine print' to get clued up on 'where you need to take out add-ons'.
Holidaymakers are also being tripped up by date-related errors, with some travelling outside of the policy window.
There has been a decline in such instances this year but it still remains the third most common issue.
Chris adds, 'It's important to be accurate in all information when taking out insurance, however knowing it's one of the top reasons claims get rejected, I would encourage travellers to be extra diligent with their travel dates.
'The best way to avoid any errors is to take out insurance as soon as you've booked any flights or transport.
'This way, the dates and times are still at the forefront of your mind, while giving you enough time to make any changes.'
Meanwhile, the expert also identifies undisclosed pre-existing medical conditions as another aspect that commonly leads to Brits having their claim rejected.
Chris clarifies what the term means: 'Pre-existing medical conditions include any illnesses, diseases or injuries that you've been diagnosed with before purchasing travel insurance'.

He urges travellers to 'declare all conditions' they may have, as 'it's essential to ensure your insurer can provide adequate care and cover'.
Chris adds: 'Failure to declare could result in your claim being rejected and leave you out of pocket by thousands of pounds.
'While travelling with these conditions, such as diabetes, can add a few more considerations to your holidays, it doesn't need to be a barrier to prevent you from exploring the world.'
