Will Standing Only Seats Revolutionize Travel? Budget Airlines Plan Launch by Next Year in Malaysia
- EXPLORE FURTHER: The brilliant aviation trick UK travelers are employing to reduce airfare expenses by hundreds
It’s a money-saving move that’s sure to divide holidaymakers – but several budget airlines are reportedly set to introduce standing-only seating options.
According to Instagram account @entrepreneurshipquote With 2.8 million followers, the bicycle-inspired cushioned seats – allowing riders to recline slightly without fully seating themselves – might be implemented as soon as 2026.
The seats, launched by Aviointeriors, aim to boost passenger capacity by 20 percent.
Nevertheless, Avionteriors chose not to comment when reached out by MailOnline, and so far, no airline has officially confirmed their intention to adopt this cost-cutting initiative.
The vertical seating design is known as Skyrider 2.0 and made its first appearance at the Aircraft Interiors Expo 2018 held in Hamburg.
The horse saddle-style seating is an improved version of a concept it tried – and failed – to launch in 2010.
Skyrider 2.0 features increased cushioning compared to its predecessor along with sturdier installations. Instead of attaching solely to a rail, this model now connects each section from the ceiling down to the floor via poles.
It said in a statement in 2018: ‘The Skyrider 2.0 is an innovative seat. It allows an ultra-high density in the aircraft cabin. Skyrider 2.0 opens the travelling experience to a wider passenger market, creating also a useful space for the introduction of mixed classes boarded on the same aircraft.

The key feature of this design is its unique base which allows for a more vertical seating position for passengers. This enables the seat to be installed with less spacing between rows, all while still providing sufficient comfort.
'The design of this seat allows carriers to boost the passenger count by 20 percent, thereby enhancing profit margins for airlines.'
At that point, the firm also mentioned that Skyrider 2.0 is 50 percent lighter compared to regular economy seating and features fewer parts for 'lower maintenance expenses'.
The assertion is that this seating marks 'the forefront of affordable tickets and enhanced passenger experience'.
The head of Ryanair, Michael O'Leary, has openly expressed his wish to introduce 'stand-up seats'.
In 2012, he mentioned wanting his Boeing 737 and 800 models equipped with 10 rows featuring these new seats and 15 rows of conventional seating.
Initially, Michael proposed that the standing tickets might could be priced anywhere from £1 to £5.
However, the partially standing seats have not garnered positive reactions from potential riders on social media platforms.

One remarked: 'This is pitiful. Handle people with dignity. Goodness me.'
Another quipped: “Before long, they might attach you to the wing with just an oxygen mask.”
A third person chimed in: “Please avoid purchasing these tickets at all costs when they are available! Do not contribute or support them.”
And another one rejected it with: 'I recognize "slave ship seating" when I see it. I'll have to decline.'
